As much as one tries to take great care of all of their things, sometimes accidents happen. If some of your upholstery was torn, you don't have to throw it away; you can just repair it.
Cut Some Fabric Bigger Than the Tear
When you need to repair a tear on your upholstery, you are going to need to purchase some fabric to make the repair with. The fabric you use to repair the tear needs to be bigger than the tear itself. Measure the space that was damaged and add a couple of inches on each side. That is how big the fabric should be that you use for the repair.
Pin Back the Damaged Fabric
Second, you are going to want to take the damaged fabric and pull it back as far as it will go. Then, slide the new piece of fabric under the tear. Take a few pins and use them to pin back the torn fabric. This will allow you to properly get the patch in place and make sure you cover the entire space with the patch fabric. Push the patch back to ensure everything is covered.
Apply Latex Fabric Glue to the Base
In order to get the patch to stick, you are going to need to glue it in place. Don't use just any glue. Purchase some latex fabric glue and apply the glue to the back of the patch and along the edges of the torn area. This will help keep the patch in place.
You want to carefully apply the glue. You may want to use a paintbrush to apply the glue to the object. With a paintbrush, you can evenly spread out the glue and prevent big globs of glue from piling up and seeping out around the edges of the patch. You want a clean patch with as little seepage of glue as possible.
Pin the Torn Fabric to the Patch
Finally, take the torn piece of fabric and pin the fabric to the new patch. This will keep the fabric together and will allow the glue on the patch to dry without the damaged fabric moving around. You can glue down the fabric to the patch for a perfect fit.
