Garage Flooded With Rain Water? Follow These Steps

by Ella Curtis

If your garage is flooded with rainwater, take steps to protect it today. Flood water can damage, corrode, or rust the items stored inside your garage, including your tools, lawnmower, and vehicle. The water may even rot or warp the wood in your garage door. Protect the items in your garage with the water restoration information below.

Clear Out the Garage Safely

If many of the items in your garage are valuable or irreplaceable, you probably want to remove them from the structure immediately. But before you do so, stand outside the garage and check it for loose electrical wiring, power cords, and electronics. If the garage isn't safe to enter, avoid it. Contact a water restoration team and allow them to clean up your garage.

If your garage is clear enough to enter, try to remove your items from it. Place or store the items away from water so they air or dry out in the sun. Some items, such as lawnmowers and gardening tools, may rust if you don't allow them to dry. Vehicles can also become rusty and moldy if they encounter water.

Now, call a local water damage restoration company for further instructions.

Restore Your Garage

A water damage restoration company will need to examine and record the extent of flood damage in your garage. If the water didn't cause significant structural damage in your garage, a company may install drying fans in the room. The fans will help draw moisture out of your garage's walls, flooring, and ceiling. The fans may also circulate enough fresh air into the room to keep mold growth at bay.

If floodwater caused significant damage in your garage, such as cracked the garage door or infiltrated the walls, a company may recommend you cut out the structures right away. Waterlogged structures may not dry out quickly enough to prevent mold and other fungi from cropping up on your garage and/or home. Depending on the environment in your garage, it may take one or two days for mold to take hold and grow.

Once your garage is completely dry, a restoration company will carefully replace the structures in the room, including the walls and ceiling. You may or may not need to replace your garage door. If the water only damaged the threshold, a damage repair company can replace it.

A team will also scrub down the floor in your garage and sanitize it. You may need to restore some parts of the floor to keep your garage safe.

If your garage is under water, contact a water damage repair company today for services.
